If you want a quick read on where growth is heading in Asia, don’t just watch the news—watch the runways.

Over the past 18 months, Vietnam and Cambodia have accelerated airport megaprojects and long‑haul routes that do more than move tourists; they reflect rewired trade flows, highlight local economic growth, and shorten executive travel times to Europe’s commercial hubs. For corporate leaders weighing relocation or expansion in Southeast Asia, these aviation shifts are early signals of where capital, talent, and suppliers are growing in abundance.

Vietnam’s Long Thành International Airport is nearing its phase‑1 opening and will anchor a new logistics-industrial belt. The growth the country has experienced in recent years has put considerable strain on current airports, which will have capacity for 25 million people and 1.2 million tons of cargo.

Vietnam Airlines is extending Asia–Europe connectivity with new nonstops: Ho Chi Minh City–Copenhagen, Hanoi–Milan, and soon Hanoi–Amsterdam, creating direct executive and cargo bridges to Europe’s financial and logistics hubs.

And last year, the RNA Team had the chance to visit the new airport built in 2023 to serve Siem Reap, Cambodia. When it opened, it was Cambodia’s largest airport, with a capacity for 58,000 flights and 7 million passengers annually. We found the facility modern, clean, and elegant (and the shopping wasn’t bad either!). It lost the top spot just two years later when the new Phnom Penh airport opened. The Techo International Airport, with three runways, will have an eventual capacity for 50 million travelers annually and is intended to support growing investment in the country.

The implications are clear: improved executive access, faster cargo velocity, emerging industrial zones, and stronger expatriate infrastructure. These runways point to the next decade’s winners in Southeast Asia’s economic geography.
