Destination Overview

Diverse, Colorful, Exotic

There is no shortage of things to do in Indonesia---whether it's exploring some of the over 17,000 islands that make up the country or soaking up the vibrant local nightlife, you will not find yourself bored. The climate is tropical all year, and the sun rises and sets at about the same time each day (6 a.m. and 6 p.m.).

On the flip side, Indonesia is quite a conservative Muslim country. Women are expected to dress modestly, and even stricter rules are being implemented to control what they wear.

Housing

The cost of housing in Indonesia varies widely. The largest factor in determining housing cost is the area in which you live. As with most other countries, the closer you are to a major city center, the more expensive your housing costs will be. Temporary housing is plentiful and relatively inexpensive---you can get a fully-furnished room with air conditioning, internet, and cable TV for about 2 to 4.5 million IDR a month.

Fun Fact

Indonesia is part of the "Ring of Fire" in the Pacific Rim area. It has over 400 volcanoes, and about 150 of them are active.

Schooling

As with many other foreign countries, most expat parents choose to forego public schools and send their children to private or international schools instead. And as with private and international schools in other countries, education will be the biggest expense an expat family has, second only to housing. International schools in Indonesia are mostly focused on Australian, British and New Zealand nationals.

Typical Costs

Average Cost

Fees at international schools in Indonesia can take a very large chunk out of your monthly budget. In addition to steep tuition fees ranging from 5 to 80 million IDR per month, there are also steep yearly registration fees of anywhere between 20 million and 90 million IDR to consider.
