Entering my third year in Singapore, this is now the third time that I have experienced Chinese New Year and the tradition of “Lo Hei”.

“Lo Hei” in Cantonese, where 捞 “lo” (literally mixing) means “tossing up good fortune”, refers to the ritual adopted in Singapore of tossing the yu sheng and saying of auspicious phrases before eating it. It is popularly believed that the higher the toss, the better your prospects and fortune in the year ahead.

Yusheng, yee sang or yuu sahng, or Prosperity Toss, also known as lo hei is a Cantonese-style raw fish salad. It usually consists of strips of raw fish, mixed with shredded vegetables and a variety of sauces and condiments, among other ingredients.

Every year during the Lunar New Year festivities we have a “Lo Hei” lunch with our office members and our Singapore consultants.

 

I am told that Singapore is quite different to China, Hong Kong, Korea, Taiwan, Vietnam, etc. all of whom celebrate the Chinese New Year.
