Between 20 – 25% of the world’s population will be celebrating the holiday which has many names including Chinese New Year and Spring Festival.  Celebrating the return of Spring, it is a time to honor ancestors and family.  The travel home made by millions is the largest migration of humans on the planet.

This year is the Year of the Pig which is considered by some to be a sign of fortune.  Year of the PIg

The festival is over 4,000 years old and it’s exact date varies from year to year.  Celebrations and festivities continue over a 15 day period , but the New Year begins on February 5th (February 4th in the West.)

Several countries in Asia and Southeast Asia observe the date as a public holiday including:

Brunei, China, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Macau, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Korea, Taiwan, Thailand, and Vietnam.
