Hong Kong is once again emerging as a leading destination for international talent, with expatriate relocations increasing significantly as the city strengthens its position as a major financial and business hub in Asia. According to a recent article by Cathie Chung at JLL, expatriate relocations to Hong Kong rose by 20% year-over-year during the first half of 2026, with relocation volumes expected to grow by at least a further 10% in 2027.

The article points to renewed growth across the financial services sector as a primary driver of this mobility trend. Hong Kong’s resurgence in global capital markets has created substantial hiring demand across investment banking, legal, audit, compliance, and professional services roles. The city led global IPO fundraising in 2025 with HKD 285.8 billion raised, and momentum continued into the first half of 2026, attracting both employers and international talent.
Another key factor behind the increase in expatriate assignments is Hong Kong’s growing prominence as a global wealth management center. The city became the world’s largest cross-border wealth management hub in 2025, surpassing Switzerland with USD 2.95 trillion in cross-border wealth. This growth has translated into increased demand for international professionals, reflected in the rise of financial services work visas granted to overseas talent. The article notes that 2,343 financial services work visas were issued in 2025, the highest number since 2022, with 2026 already maintaining strong momentum.
As organizations expand their presence in Hong Kong, the demand for international assignments, relocation support, destination services, and housing assistance continues to grow. The influx of expatriates is already influencing both the commercial and residential property markets, with rising demand for premium office space and expatriate housing.
According to the JLL analysis, the trend reflects increasing confidence among multinational corporations, financial institutions, and investment firms in Hong Kong’s long-term business outlook. The city is once again becoming a preferred destination for organizations looking to establish or expand their Asian operations, creating new opportunities for global talent mobility and international workforce deployment.
