Countries around the world are trying to tackle the overabundance of plastic waste that seems to be everywhere these days. Bans on drinking straws have been set for implementation in countries around the world. In Hong Kong, one group has taken aim at the disposable plastic umbrella covers offered by stores and government buildings.
Hong Kong uses up to 41 million disposable umbrella bags during the rainy season that runs from June to September according to this article on the subject.
While the plastic bags are an easy solution, several others are available. For example in some places including Hong Kong and Japan, umbrella lockers are available outside each premises. A patron or guest can simply insert the umbrella into the stand and either take the key or lock via a short combination.
Umbrella drying stations are also being implemented and when all else fails, recycling bins for all those used bags are being made available.
