Destination Overview

Modern, Thriving, Active.

In addition to the modern metropolis of Santiago, Chile has many natural wonders to behold: Easter Island, where you'll see over 800 figures carved from volcanic rock; the Atacama Desert, considered the driest desert in the world; over 30 national parks, and almost 50 nature preserves.

Quick Info

  • Currency: Chilean Peso (CLP)
  • Electricity: 220 V, 50 Hz, plug types C and L
  • Languages: Spanish
  • Population: 17 million

Chile has numerous housing options, and even the most luxurious, top-quality housing is fairly affordable compared to many other countries. Housing costs to rent or buy are among the least expensive in all of Latin America, and the current construction boom means there's no shortage of housing from which to choose.

Typical Costs

Temporary Accommodation
  • Furnished 1-bedroom apartment is 175,000 to 240,000 CLP
  • Furnished 2-bedroom apartment is 220,000 to 380,000 CLP

Utilities are not included in rent, so be sure to factor those items into your monthly budget.  Gas, water and electric are typically reasonably priced, but heating bills during the winter tend to skyrocket due to poorly insulated housing.  Expect to spend anywhere from 11,000 to 30,000 CLP on utilities.

Fun Fact

The Atacama Desert in Chile is considered the driest place in the entire world, getting less than 0.05 mm of rain each year.

While public schools in Chile have open enrollment and welcome expat families, most foreign families tend to enroll their children in private schools due to the issues that can arise from the language barrier (public schools generally conduct classes entirely in Spanish), as well as curricula and facilities that may be below the standard of what most people would get in the United States. Private and international schools, on the other hand, typically feature better facilities, as well as classes that are conducted in a variety of languages to suit the students enrolled.

Typical Costs

Average Costs
  • One-time incorporation fee is  300 to 3,000 USD.
  • Yearly fee is 400 to 2,000 USD.
  • Monthly fees are 400 to 2,000 USD.

You won't find any eggs on Easter Island; instead, you'll find over 850 "moai," which are enormous figures carved out of volcanic rock.

  • Crater Lake

The crater lake at Ojos del Salado on the border of Chile and Argentina is the highest lake in the world, reaching 6390 m (20,960 ft).

Chile is the longest north-south country in the world, stretching a vast 4,600 km (over 2850 miles) in length and only reaching about 150 km (93 miles) wide from east to west.

  • Fiestas Patrias

It is mandatory to display the Chilean flag on all public buildings during Fiestas Patrias (Sept. 18-19), and neglecting to do so can result in fines.
